Young astronomers will delight in OWI’s newest Mini Solar Kit – as they build, paint and watch their very own Solar System come to life with real solar energy. Planets orbit around the solar-paneled “sun” that drives a motor so the planets actually move. This excellent educational solar kit provides a hands-on lesson about how solar power drives a motor. The kit comes with 6 colors of opaque acrylic paint, plus brush—which makes for the perfect exercise in science and creativity.

Very unique planet mobile!
Posted by A. Shareef on 1st May 2015
I bought this planet mobile kit for my 7 year-old son to build for a 4H project and I am very pleased with it. He enjoyed putting it together and painting it. The sun has a solar panel in it which, when exposed to light, allows the planets to orbit. The planets are all attached at a different distance from the sun so Mercury completes one orbit faster than Neptune which is great from a teaching perspective.
Negatives: The mobile is SMALL. Mercury is about 1 cm in diameter, maybe even a little less. This made painting the planets very difficult. We used toothpicks to hold the planets while painting since there is no other way to paint them while holding in your hand. Also, it requires A LOT of light to activate the mobile. We haven't tried it in the sun since it hasn't been sunny since we built it but we had to use a 250 watt work light held right up to the sun to activate it.
Overall it is a very nice mobile that shows kids how the planets orbit the sun which has been a hit with my kids. Would highly recommend this as compared to stationary mobiles.
